Los Angeles Auto Show: 2009 Nissan 370Z Coupe

LOS ANGELES — Nissan today pulled the covers back on its redesigned 2009 370Z Coupe, which formally debuts November 19 at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Car Crazy Central brought you details of the sixth-generation Z-car nearly two weeks ago, including our educated guess that the new, shorter Z will share its 3.7-liter VQ engine and seven-speed automatic transmission with the latest incarnations of the Infiniti G37 coupe and sedan.

Although we've been privy to several rounds of spy photos, this is the first official look at the 370Z's uncamouflaged sheet metal, plus production-ready cabin.

The architecture of the interior is familiar, as the steering wheel is mounted on a movable pod and there are three small instruments on top of the dash, but the cheap, hard plastic of the current Z-car has mercifully disappeared.

This is the first significant overhaul of the Z since the fifth-generation model was introduced in 2003. U.S. sales begin in early 2009, and a 370Z convertible is also expected for the 2010 model year.

What You Need To Know Before You Buy A Car

Things To Consider

Size/Market Segment: Sedans come in three basic sizes: compact, midsize and large (or full-size). Market segments include crossover, exotic, hybrid, luxury, performance and sport. Some models don't fit neatly into any one group.

Price: Compact sedans can range from $10,000 for an economy sedan to more than $40,000 for a luxury model. Midsize sedans start around $18,000 and top off in the $80Ks. Large sedans run from the low-$20Ks for your typical family sedan to more than $300K for an exotic.

Engines/Fuel Economy: You'll see four-, five-, six-, eight- and even 12-cylinder engines in this group. Compacts are the best bets for gas mileage, especially the gas-electric hybrids.

Safety: Family shoppers should look at crash test scores and check the availability of features like ABS, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and stability control. Luxury sedans may offer features like parking sensors, run-flat tires, accident preparedness systems and lane-departure warning systems.

Luxury and Convenience Features: Luxuries like automatic climate control, heated seats, in-dash CD changers, navigation systems, keyless startup systems and Bluetooth capability can often be found in non-luxury sedans. Look for them as you shop. If you're a long-distance commuter, look for multiple seat adjustments (particularly lumbar) and plentiful cupholder and storage provisions.

Passenger Capacity/Interior Space: Most compact and midsize sedans can transport four adults in reasonable comfort. Taller families and those with five to carry should consider a large sedan.

Luggage Capacity: Generally, compacts offer 12-13 cubic feet of trunk space, midsize sedans offer 14-16 and large sedans offer 17-21. If you'll be hauling anything bulky, get a sedan with folding rear seats or a ski pass-through.

Do You Need All-Wheel Drive? Some sport sedans come with all-wheel drive for the sake of stability during high-speed maneuvers. General consumers should only pay extra for AWD if they regularly drive in snow or otherwise slippery conditions. Keep in mind that the additional weight of AWD mechanicals often results in lower fuel economy.

Manual vs. Automatic Transmission: Most drivers prefer the ease of an automatic, but a manual gearbox usually offers increased performance and slightly better fuel economy. Some automatics offer an automanual mode, which simulates manual shifting. A growing number of sedans offer a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which provides the same convenience as a regular automatic but is often more responsive and promotes better fuel economy.

Operating Costs: Sedans are the standard by which all other vehicles are judged; although their price and size vary widely, buyers looking for low-cost transportation will inevitably end up with four doors and a trunk. Low-priced compact and midsize sedans are the cheapest to own; they don't use much gas, they don't cost a lot to insure and their lack of complexity keeps repair bills down. Luxury sedans may come with a limited free maintenance plan, but expect higher costs as they age. Higher-performance sedans often cost more to insure and maintain.

New Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Debuts in Malaysia

August 21, 2008

Reflecting a leap beyond just a facelift or an upgrade from the previous generation, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia today unveils its flagship model with the new Lancer Evolution featuring an entirely new platform, engine and enhanced functional design inside and out.

From L-R : Mr Keizo Ono (CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia), Mr. Kojiro Asai (Manager of Asia & ASEAN A Department Asia & ASEAN Office of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation), Datuk Syed Hisham Syed Wazir (Chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia), En Omar Haron (COO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia)
From L-R : Mr Keizo Ono (CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia), Mr. Kojiro Asai (Manager of Asia & ASEAN A Department Asia & ASEAN Office of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation), Datuk Syed Hisham Syed Wazir (Chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia), En Omar Haron (COO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia)

Responding to market demands for design, riding comfort, spaciousness and a high level of safety, the new Lancer Evolution features an aggressive styling with an optimal shape while taking the Lancer Evolution's aerodynamics to a new level.

Equipped with the latest automotive engineering technology, the new Lancer Evolution showcases an all-new engine. The new Lancer Evolution draws exhilarating power from the redesigned lightweight 4B11 2.0 litre MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-Timing Electronic Control) Twin Scroll Turbocharged Engine with aluminium block producing an increased power of 291bhp (295 PS) and an impressive torque of 366Nm.

"With a history spanning over three decades rooted in racing heritage, the new Lancer Evolution is reliving a new generation as Mitsubishi Motors' flagship model and a symbol of Mitsubishi sports DNA. The development of the new Lancer Evolution is a profound process of passion and emotion from start to end as Mitsubishi Motors' engineers strive to balance form and functionality while remaining true to the car's heritage," said Mr Keizo Ono, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

"For the very first time, the Twin Clutch SST gearbox is introduced in the Lancer Evolution. Combining superior performance and the convenience of an automated manual transmission, the new Lancer Evolution is no longer just about speed enjoyed by enthusiasts. Instead, this new technology will appeal to a wider market and impress just about anyone who drives it. It is now more impressive - both performance and a road car with more space, comfort and safer than before," continued Mr Ono.

"Delivering peak performance with true racing technology, the creation of the new Lancer Evolution is indeed a milestone. The birth of the new Lancer Evolution is not just for Mitsubishi Motors, but for everyone who loves high-performance cars that are both functional and stylish. Therefore I am very proud to say that the new Lancer Evolution is now both a reality and a Mitsubishi Motors' flagship," said Mr Kojiro Asai, Manager, Asia & ASEAN A Department of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation of Japan.

Developed to make the car aggressively quick while also making it as safe and comfortable to drive as possible, the new Lancer Evolution is a new-generation high-performance AWD (All Wheel Drive) sedan that is built on Mitsubishi's dynamic driving experience while adding a new dimension to speed with control, security and safety.

An exclusive feature and an all-new development is the advanced 6-speed Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission). The Twin Clutch SST is an automated manual transmission that employs dual clutches to deliver slicker shifting through the gears while also providing efficient power transmission for outstanding fuel economy. The Twin Clutch SST in the new Lancer Evolution allows the driver to choose from three different control modes - Normal, Sport and S-Sport - to cater to varied driving situations.

Delivering a dynamic driving experience to the new Lancer Evolution is the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) - an advanced vehicle dynamics control system that integrates precise management of its ACD (Active Centre Differential), AYC (Active Yaw Control), ASC (Active Stability Control) and Sport ABS (Sport Anti-lock Brake System) to execute high-precision control over the vehicle.

As a symbol of Mitsubishi Motors DNA, the engineers at Mitsubishi Motors spared no efforts in redesigning the suspension of the new Lancer Evolution - the result is a new suspension system equipped with Brembo ventilated disc brakes, Eibach coil springs complete with Bilstein shock absorbers, 18-inch BBS lightweight alloy wheels, MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. All these to provide increased stability, enhanced steering response, better control and optimum safety.

There is no other more important function of a car than to ensure the safety of its occupants and with the Lancer Evolution, safety is not something that is added but integrated into the car at an integral level.

Built around Mitsubishi's cutting edge RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) structure, the body is designed to redirect force from reaching the cabin, ensuring maximum crash protection from all sides of the car.

For added protection, the new Lancer Evolution comes with a 7-Airbags System - driver and front passenger SRS airbags, side and curtain airbags and driver knee airbag.

ELR seatbelt with pre-tensioner and force limiter and HID (High Intensity Discharge) head lamps with AFS (Adaptive Front Lighting System) come standard on the new Lancer Evolution.

Every detail of the new Lancer Evolution has been designed as part of the total driving pleasure. Reflecting a lineage that made winning impressions worldwide, the new Lancer Evolution crafts a handsome and functional exterior styling for optimum aerodynamic performance. Its stylish and sleek bodylines, coupled with ample airdams and large rear spoiler works in tandem for maximum control.

For a complete premium package the new Lancer Evolution comes with Recaro full bucket front seats, multi-mode information display, genuine leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel with mounted audio controls and cruise control buttons and a 9-speaker Rockford Fosgate Premium Sound System.

Other functional features include keyless operating system and sunroof.

Cadillac CTS Coupe

CTS COUPE CONCEPT CELEBRATES CADILLAC’S DESIGN RENAISSANCE

"DETROIT – Having earned critical acclaim, industry awards and brisk sales, Cadillac CTS has moved into the vanguard of contemporary design. In doing so, Cadillac designers faced the question of what to do next. Their answer celebrates that design legacy with the exhilarating Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept, which premiered at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

The CTS Coupe takes Cadillac’s acclaimed Art and Science design language and adds more of both. More expressive, more technical and very personal, the CTS Coupe extends the dramatic design of its sedan predecessor with all-new sculpted bodywork aft of the front fenders.

“The CTS Coupe Concept is a dramatic design statement,” said Ed Welburn, VP, GM Global Design. “We did not create it as the result of sifting through reams of market data, nor is its shape trimmed to suit the input collected at a consumer clinic – it is emotion on four wheels and the very essence of what defines Cadillac today.”

The CTS Coupe Concept has a classic 2+2 interior layout, highlighted by black leather and microfiber trim that is complemented by yellow ochre-colored seat inserts and leather stitching. It is designed to accommodate a range of engines for the global luxury market, including Cadillac’s popular 3.6L Direct Injection V-6, as well as a new 2.9L turbo-diesel currently in development.

“This Coupe Concept is a natural extension of our design language, and of the CTS itself,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. “Very simply, the dramatic design of the sedan begged the question of what it would look like in the unbridled form of a Coupe.”

Generated from the spark of the CTS design team’s imagination, the CTS Coupe casts a profile unlike anything else on the road. Its fast-rake styling – it has the same wheelbase as the CTS, but an overall height that is approximately two inches (51 mm) lower and an overall length that is two inches (51 mm) shorter – blends with hand-sculpted bodywork that bulges around the wheels, giving the vehicle a ready-to-pounce stance that is dramatic, powerful and sleek.

“Just about every decade, Cadillac designs a breakthrough car that becomes synonymous with the brand’s character of the period, such as the 1938 60 Special, the 1959 lineup, the 1975 Seville and the 2003 Sixteen Concept,” said Clay Dean, Cadillac’s global design director. “The CTS Coupe Concept is the next great design, carrying the baton from the Evoq Concept that ushered in the Art and Science era in 1999.” Read More

Ferrari California > Model Overview

The California is the newest Ferrari model to come out of the Pininfarina design studio, and will be the first ever front V8-engined chariot to wear the highly desired Prancing Horse badge. It revives a name from the brand's past, adorning the rump of the 250GT built between 1957 and 1959. Some of us may remember a replica of one such model getting destroyed on the big screen in Ferris Bueller's ...
